Recap in a nutshell

Following the milestone event in Dali, the Plain District brought a comprehensive electronic music program of magnitude and scale to one of China's most prestigious music venues, the SNPAC Concert Hall in Xi'an, commonly reserved for classical music concerts by Chinese and international artists and orchestras, unleashing unexplored cultural offerings for artists and audiences. The innovative event also premiered the first-ever electronic music program, featuring cross-media installations and audio-visual live performances, to be included in the prestigious Xi'an International Music Festival in its 22-year history.

The collaboration with the inviting partner SoundFact, the independent promoter under SNPAC, unlocked a unique opportunity for the Plain District platform and China's electronic music culture. Creative and technical know-how were set to be bundled and implemented in a first-of-its-kind event in China.

In their thought and work processes, artists are subject to a permanent flow of breaking, deconstructing, cracking open, and creating. The results and snapshots of this process manifest themselves in the form of artistic vision and practice. Every work of art, every type of performance, is ultimately only an excerpt of a creative concept and serves as a means of transport to make an idea visible, audible, or tangible.

The Plain District originates from such fiction, as a matrix of constant change and renewal — a temporary coming into the world, without aiming for a fixed, final form. It is an imaginary space where artistic, musical processes, and visions converge, perceptible through experiences in the dialogue between designed space and musical performance.

About 素域 Plain District

The Plain District is a nonprofit platform investigating contemporary electronic music culture. Annual events in cities across China, held in abandoned factories, avant-garde architectural spaces, historic sites, music venues, and renowned concert halls, unfold a synthesis of the arts, technology, and music.

Supported by the German Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany Beijing, and the German consulates in Chengdu and Guangzhou, the Plain District has been fostering creative dialogue and sustainable cultural exchange between electronic music protagonists and communities in China and internationally since 2021.

The 2024 edition has been breaking raw ground by presenting four formats in four cities (Dali, Xi'an, Beijing, and Guangzhou), expanding the project's innovative power and adaptability — an international format, developed in China.
