A False Coronation John 12:12-19

Coronation – is the ceremony whereby a sovereign is inaugurated into office by receiving upon his head the crown, which is the chief symbol of regal authority.

"This was the day all Jew's had waited for and all the Prophets had prophesied about..."

I. The People Prepared for Jesus v.12
a. Large crowds had come to the Passover Feast
b. Historical estimate was 2 million Jews
c. They came to observe the ceremonies

II. The People Prepared to Honor Jesus v.13a
a. It was when they heard Jesus was coming they made preparation to receive Him
b. Palm branches equal HONOR

III. The People Went to Meet Jesus v.13b
a. They acted, they didn't wait!
b. The cried Hosanna, Hosanna
c. They wanted Jesus to give them the Victory Now!
d. They paid no attention to how He came into Jerusalem

IV. Jesus Rode in on a Donkey vss. 14-15
a. Jesus came as the Humble One!
b. He didn't come in on a warhorse
c. The donkey spoke of His mission - Peace Zech 9:9
d. Christ the warrior King Rev 19:11-12

V. Disciples Confused by Jesus' entrance v.16
a. They had always walked for the 3 1/2 yrs they were with Jesus.
b. He had never made such a request before

VI. The World Follows vss. 17-18
a. The people were chasing the miracles of Jesus
b. Lazarus was one of the most visible one
c. Even the Pharisees couldn't top the miracle of Lazarus' resurrection v.19

VII. The Chant Begins to Change Why?
a. Jesus cleanses the Temple Matt 21:12-13
b. The Pharisees and Scribes seek to kill Jesus and Lazarus because the Jews were believing in Jesus John 12:10-11
c. The Jews wanted a Military Redeemer, someone that was going to conqueror Rome and set them free
d. Jesus wasn't that military conqueror, but was our Spiritual Redeemer.

VIII. Betrayal of Jesus Began from Within
a. One of the Twelve betrayed Jesus Matt 26:14-16
b. The attempted destruction of the Church started from within
c. Judas was no different than any of the other people that only wanted to view Jesus as what they wanted and when He didn't live up to their image they turned on Him

IX. The Passover Meal
a. Jesus identified His betrayer Jhn 13:21-28
b. Jesus instituted the Lord's Supper Matt 26:26-29
c. It was done so we would Remember Him and what He has done for us.

X. Jesus Prays for this Cup to Pass
a. Jesus prayed to the Father Matt 26:39
b. The Cup was the cup of God's Wrath Jer 25:15

XI. The Chant Turned to Crucify Him
a. He was placed before Pontius Pilate and the crowd shout Crucify Him Mrk 15:12-14
b. Isaiah prophesied this Isa 53:3-6

XII. In No Other Person Is Salvation Found
a. Salvation can only be found in Jesus Christ
b. It is when we are baptized into Jesus' death through our confession of faith Rom 10:9-10
