It’s hard to say good bye. It’s easier to say thank you.

We thank Police Service Dog Maverick for his service to others, especially to his partner Constable Johnny Sabatini. Maverick stood watch with his partner day and night going where ever duty called. Maverick was known for his keen senses for sniffing out crime and those engaging in it. He was a loyal partner and friend.

It saddens us to now share with you that Maverick passed away as a result of sudden medical issues on Friday September 2, 2016. Maverick only had four more shifts left until his retirement. He will be missed by all of us. Rest well Maverick. Your tour is now complete.

Constable John Sabatini has been a member of the Hamilton Police Service since 2003 and joined the Canine Unit in 2009 with his partner Maverick, a purebred German Shepherd. Maverick was born in the Netherlands on January 19, 2008. He was trained to detect human scent, narcotics, firearms and currency detection. Maverick played a key role during many police operations and was a familiar furry friend in and around Hamilton to many officers and people who had a chance to meet Maverick at community events. To “Serve and Detect”. Maverick certainly did just that.
