Welcome to the world of Vacheron Constantin. Today we're looking at the Historiques American 1921 functions and care. The watch is a historical tribute piece with the in-house, manual wind, caliber 4400. In order to energize the movement from a stop, when the crown is in the first location flush to the case gently wind clockwise. After 20 turns, the watch should be in motion with the seconds hand in motion and the balance oscillating on the caseback. To fully energize, continue winding until light resistance is felt. At this point, the watch's 65-hour power reserve has been fully energized.

To set the time on the watch, withdrawal the crown to it's second position and turn in a clockwise position until the hour and minute hands are set to the desired time. It is important to note that the winding of the timepiece should take place at the same time every day. Vacheron Constantin recommends this because the high points when the mainspring barrel is full and the low points when it is relatively discharged will be uniform across each 24-hour cycle ensuring that the watch receives optimal chronometric performance.

The Historiques American 1921 is a dress watch rated to 30m water resistance. Vacheron Constantin recommends that any watch with a rating of 30m be regarded as only protected against splashes or rain and should never be submerged for swimming or bathing. In order to achieve the rated water resistance, it is important to maintain the crown flush to the case. Moreover the crown should never be wound or withdrawn for setting when moisture is present on the crown assembly. Dry the watch prior to setting the time or winding the watch. When the crown is wet, it can result in the seals being bypassed.

When you see moisture in the dial or through the display caseback, immediately take the watch to a Vacheron Constantin authorized retailer or boutique store for rapid intervention to prevent aesthetic or mechanical damage to the timepiece. Vacheorn Constantin recommends having every watch water tested on an annual basis to maintain factory rated resistance. In all cases, leather straps should be considered to have no water resistance whatsoever. Exposure to moisture can accelerate the degradation of this natural material.

Vacheron Constantin also advises not exposing the watch to any speakers, refrigerator doors, powerful magnets, high power wiring looms or magnetic reference imaging machines. All of these can magnetize the hairspring of the timepiece causing erratic timing. If you suspect the watch has been magnetized, take your watch to a factory authorized retailer or factory owned boutique as they each have proper equipment to demagnetize the hairspring.

Vacheron Constantin recommends to service a simple watch such as this Historiques American 1921 every 4-5 years exclusively at an authorized retailer or factory boutique. This is important because only these outlets will have the trained personnel, specialized equipment and original factory replacement parts to ensure the value of your investment and the performance of your timepiece. Moreover, only authorized outlets can back their work with a factory warranty on service and parts.
