“I was born in the year of fear.” — Thomas Hobbes.
There are centuries that begin with faith, and there are centuries that begin with terror.
For Thomas Hobbes, the seventeenth century was not a dawn, but a storm.
He was born in 1588 — the year the Spanish Armada appeared on the English horizon. Cannons thundered across the Channel, kingdoms shook, and an entire nation held its breath.
