🐍 A distressed young woman, Miss Helen Stoner, visits Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, fearing for her life. Two years earlier, her twin sister, Julia, died mysteriously just before her wedding, uttering the cryptic last words: "The speckled band!" and mentioning a whistle she heard in the night. Now, Helen is planning her own marriage, and her ill-tempered, physically imposing stepfather, Dr. Grimesby Roylott, has moved her into the same bedroom where her sister died.

Dr. Roylott, a doctor who served in India and has a violent temper and exotic pets (a cheetah and a baboon), is the heir to his late wife's substantial income, but only while both stepdaughters remain unmarried. If either marries, they receive a share of the income, substantially reducing Roylott's funds.

Holmes deduces a financial motive and suspects the locked-room mystery involves Roylott's connections to India. He and Watson stake out the room. They discover several anomalies: an unconnected bell-pull hanging near the bed, a newly installed ventilator that leads directly into Roylott's room, and the bed being clamped to the floor.

That night, they hear the mysterious whistle and then a subtle metallic sound. Holmes strikes violently at the bell-pull with his cane. A moment later, they hear a terrible shriek from Roylott's room. Rushing in, they find Roylott dead, with "The Speckled Band"—a highly venomous snake (likely an Indian swamp adder)—coiled around his head.

Holmes explains that Roylott had trained the snake to crawl through the ventilator and down the bell-pull rope to kill his stepdaughters before their marriages. Holmes's blow with the cane merely angered the snake and drove it back through the ventilator, where it fatally struck its owner.
