Using rice & a big feeding to heat up your worm bin in the winter helps to keep them actively making natural fertilizer & soil amendments in the form of worm castings. It can be done safely if your worm bin is big enough to have a temperature gradient away from the heat.

In this checkin of my outdoor worm bin I show the various temperatures in different parts of the bin and spread out the feeding after 5 days to help keep the temperature in the appropriate range for my red wiggler compost worms. I run into several warm balls & also find zones without worms in the hottest parts of the worm bin. I also add chick peas or garbanzo beans to the bin to see if, and how fast the worms will turn them into worm castings.
