🩺 Topic Covered in This Video: Prenatal Diagnostic and Fetal Assessment Tests
In this nursing class, we will deeply understand the most important prenatal diagnostic tests that help in assessing fetal growth, well-being, and early detection of abnormalities.
This topic is extremely important for B.Sc Nursing, M.Sc Nursing, and GNM students — especially in Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBG) subject and for competitive exams like AIIMS, NORCET, ESIC, NHM, and State PSC Nursing Officer exams.
📚 Detailed Concepts Explained
1️⃣ Ultrasound in Pregnancy
Ultrasound is the most common and safe test to visualize fetal growth, detect multiple pregnancies, placental position, and estimate gestational age.
It uses sound waves (not radiation) and is completely harmless for the baby.
2️⃣ Amniocentesis
A procedure done around 15–18 weeks where a small sample of amniotic fluid is taken using a fine needle under ultrasound guidance.
It helps detect chromosomal abnormalities like Down’s Syndrome, genetic disorders, and fetal infections.
3️⃣ Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)
A test done around 10–12 weeks where a small sample of placental tissue (chorionic villi) is collected either through the cervix or abdomen.
Used for early diagnosis of genetic or chromosomal defects.
4️⃣ Cordocentesis (PUBS)
This test involves taking a small blood sample from the umbilical cord to check for fetal anemia, infection, or Rh incompatibility.
5️⃣ Contraction Stress Test (CST)
This test evaluates how well the fetus tolerates the stress of uterine contractions by monitoring fetal heart rate changes using oxytocin or nipple stimulation.
6️⃣ Fetal Movement Count (FMC)
Also known as “Kick Count,” this is a simple self-monitoring test done by the mother in the third trimester to check fetal well-being by counting movements.
7️⃣ Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI)
This ultrasound test measures the amount of amniotic fluid to assess fetal health.
Normal range is 8–18 cm; less than 5 indicates oligohydramnios (low fluid), and more than 25 indicates polyhydramnios (excess fluid).
💡 Why This Topic Is Important
Helps identify high-risk pregnancies
Detects congenital abnormalities early
Ensures proper fetal monitoring and safe delivery planning
Very important in Maternity Nursing practical and viva exams
