What should have been a simple Karthigai Deepam ritual this year turned into a major legal and administrative clash.
Devotees insisted that lighting the lamp is an age-old Tamil tradition. But with the dargah nearby, officials hesitated.
The Madras High Court stepped in, allowed the ritual, and emphasised communal harmony.
But on the day of the event, police blocked devotees under Section 144, a prohibitory order the court later held was issued only to obstruct its directions.
The Court quashed the order and warned the administration about disobeying judicial mandates.
The State appealed — but the division bench dismissed it.
Now, the matter is before the Supreme Court.
