Dr. Hatem Amer, a Transplant Nephrologist and Dr. Sheila Jowsey-Gregoire, a Psychiatrist from the William J. von Liebig Center for Transplantation and Clinical Regeneration at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, and Dr. Martin Kumnig, a Professor of Clinical Psychology from the Center for Advanced Psychology in Plastic and Transplant Surgery in Innsbruck, Austria, review their article appearing in the June 2022 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where they share the process for developing an international working group for teams interested in reconstructive transplantation, such as with face transplants or upper extremity transplants. They note the primary goals of the group currently consist of defining standards for pre-transplant psychosocial evaluation and post-transplant psychosocial care. They hope this article can provide a template for other groups interested in this life-enhancing effort.
