Описание к видео Voices Across the Reeds: Dramatising the Effects of Climate Change

Voices across the Reeds engages young adults from East Norfolk Sixth Form College with nature writing, providing an opportunity for them to learn about the effects of climate change and time on RSPB Strumpshaw Fen, Norfolk. The project is part of UEA’s new interdisciplinary research programme CreativeUEA, in collaboration with ClimateUEA.

Over four visits, the students are engaging with the reserve as a focus for their learning about climate change and have been introduced to different ways of responding to what they encounter - nature writing, photography and theatre - by UEA experts including Professor Jean McNeil, Professor Steve Waters and Dr Elizabeth Lewis Williams, all of whom tackle climate change in their own work. They are providing some models for the students’ writing, including Waters' own works Voices from the Reeds which represents voices of the Norfolk countryside through time and Song of the Reed, a BBC Radio 4 production. The expert knowledge of RSPB staff is supporting the students’ understanding of how climate change is affecting birds and migration and of how the nature reserve mitigates against its damaging impact.

All 16 students are volunteers with a commitment to voicing their responses to climate change and they will present their research in performance at the Fen in December 2021. The project has been supported by an Arts and Humanities Research Council grant designed to support interventions encouraging 14 to 18-year-olds to engage with and contribute to important climate research in the run up to COP26. East Norfolk Sixth Form College is a partner of UEA’s Outreach team and located at the mouth of the River Yare, which flows through Strumpshaw Fen.
