Great Britain is one of many nations that have banned imports of Russian oil and oil products to limit Moscow's ability to get funding for its war. However, reports claim that refining rules allow Russian crude oil products to reach the UK. According to the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air, this "loophole" allows nations like India and China, which have not imposed sanctions on Russia, to lawfully import Russian crude oil and refine it into petroleum products such as jet fuel and diesel. These countries would then export their products to Britain or the EU. Global Witness calculated that the UK imported over 5 million barrels of petroleum products derived from Russian crude oil in 2023. It remains critical to close all loopholes for sanctions evasion and make anti-Russian restrictions work efficiently.
