Ethical gift wrap – inspired by nature

Christmas is well known for over-indulgence, but many people don’t realise that shop bought gift wrap usually isn’t recyclable because of its shiny look and feel.
So, with the environment hot on everyone’s lips I thought it would be great to share some of my alternative, sustainable gift wrap ideas – inspired by nature.
In Japan the art of furoshiki, or wrapping with cloth means that nothing is wasted. Instead of buying the real thing, I use patterned tea towels, table napkins and scarves but you could cut old fabric into squares – there are so many different ways to wrap your gift with cloth.
And what about the decoration? I never throw ribbon away, but equally nice is garden twine and even chunky old balls of wool. Everything else comes from my garden or from walks – herbs, berries, hydrangeas and grasses hung up to dry - I think the fiery colours of pressed autumn leaves work really well.
Of course, as well as being more eco, who doesn’t love being given a gift that shows how much someone cares for you and I think nothing says that more than creating your own – so get collecting and give it a go.
