I heard that Parkinson’s disease patients can be helped with cannabis therapy. Is that true?

Hi everyone. I’m Dr. Dan Stein and I will address that question with you today.

Parkinson’s disease is a very common neurodegenerative process that results in stiffness, tremor, problems with balance and sleep.

It turns out that cannabis therapy can be very effective for Parkinson’s symptoms and we use it here in the clinic every day. Patients notice less tremor. They seem to do better with muscle stiffness. They don’t have as much rigidity and importantly, they do better with sleep.

So we’re happy to provide cannabis therapy for patients with Parkinson’s disease. But the type of cannabis therapy is important to designate because there are some patients who have a confusion or psychosis associated with Parkinson’s disease. They become paranoid and may even have hallucinations. Some of you may know someone like that.

In those individuals, we use CBD-rich cannabis varieties because too much THC can cause problems for them.

Other individuals who have less of those psychiatric parts of the Parkinson’s syndrome do better with a little bit more THC. So when patients come into the clinic, we talk about their symptoms, what they need to achieve and what types of cannabis therapy are available to them.
