Spider was formed in New York in 1977. The band consisted of Holly Knight (keyboards), Keith Lentin (guitar), Anton Fig (drums), Amanda Blue (lead vocals), and Jimmy Lowell (bass). The band is considered a one-hit wonder when their debut single in 1980, "New Romance (It's a Mystery)", just made the Top 40, peaking at #39 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also made the Top 40 on the Cash Box Top 100, making it to #37. Their follow-up, "Everything Is Alright", only made it to #86 on Billboard.

They released a second album in 1981, "Between The Lines", which featured the original version of the Knight-penned "Better Be Good To Me". Spider's version never charted, but was later a big hit for Tina Turner. The blues rock/neo doo-wop tinged song, "It Didn't Take Long", was also released as a single, but missed the Top 40. On the Billboard Hot 100 it peaked at #43 and made it to #50 on the Cash Box Top 100.

Knight went on to form Device and continues to become a successful songwriter. Fig (born in South Africa) recorded and played drums for many acts (KISS, Mick Jagger, Paul Simon, Frehley's Comet, Madonna, Bob Dylan) and currently is a member of Paul Shaffer's band (since 1986). Blue continues to perform independently and goes by the name of Amanda Blue Leigh. Lentin, also born in South Africa, continues as a producer. After Spider disbanded, Lowell played bass for Shanghai (featuring all the other members of Spider sans Knight, who was repleaced by Beau Hill), EBN-OZN, and Fast Forward.
