More exercising Right to Information (RTI) means more accountability.
Public entities would be more accountable and answerable if people practice RTI more and more. It works like a watchdog on institutions to ensure transparency in performing public affairs. It was stated by Syed Saadat Jahan, Deputy Director Communication, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Commission (KPIC) while imparting a lecture on RTI to the participants of ‘Youth Leadership Program’ arranged by a non-governmental organization Center for Governance and Public Accountability (CGPA) for selected youth from all over the province, here at Peshawar on Wednesday.
Syed Saadat Jahan said that most of the public bodies have appointed its public Information officers (PIOs), if not appointed then as per the KP RTI Act the head of the public body is PIO of his/her relevant public body. Citizens can lodge RTI requests to the PIOs of public bodies for any information of public interest. Mr. Jahan added that 60% of Pakistan’s population is youth, they can play better role in development and transparency of public entities if they are well informed of their basic rights.
