The Side Striped Jackal (Canis adustus) is typically considered to be rarer than the Black Backed Jackal (Canis mesomelas) in southern Africa. But in the heart of the Okavango Delta, they are extremely common and though considered in most regions to be nocturnal, they are very often seen during the day in this wilder parts of Africa. Its diet is eclectic, consisting of pretty much any small animals it encounters including birds, insects, reptiles and mammals. They also eat berries, seeds and other plant material. In some areas they are larger than Black Backed Jackals but those at Duba Plains are somewhat smaller than jackals we normally encounter in central South Africa. As can be seen by the reaction of the kudu in the first parts of this video, they are not particularly feared as predators and thus most antelope do not see them as a threat except for perhaps as a threat to new-born calves. While lions and wild dogs hunt, there are typically several of these small carnivores following along, waiting to scavenge off any potential kill by the larger carnivores.
