One garden bed. Many seasons. A cottage garden that keeps changing.

I don’t have a large garden or endless space to work with. Like a lot of people, I’m gardening in a small area and this one garden bed has become a creative outlet over the years.

In this video, I’m sharing the evolution of a single garden bed as it slowly became a cottage garden. Using photos from years past, I show how this space has changed season by season, plant by plant, and how letting go of perfection made gardening more enjoyable, flexible, and fun.

This isn’t a “how-to” or a step-by-step tutorial. It’s more of a story about experimenting, changing your mind, and allowing a garden to evolve instead of trying to get it right the first time. If you’ve ever felt discouraged because your garden didn’t look the way you imagined, this video is for you.

I garden in the Pacific Northwest in Zone 8b, where mild winters and long growing seasons make it easier to try new things year after year. This bed has held so many different versions of my garden — different plants, different layouts, different ideas — and none of them were wrong. Each season taught me something new.

If you’re gardening in a small space, renting, or only have room for one raised bed or border, I hope this video gives you permission to keep experimenting. You don’t need a sprawling estate to grow a cottage garden. You don’t need to commit to one design forever. One garden bed can change again and again, just like we do.
