Damodar Kund, Mount Girnar. Damodar Kund is situated on the road to Girnar in Junagadh. According to folklore, Narsingh Mehta used to come here to take bath every day. Junagadh Tirthabhoomi is associated with the name of Lord Krishna and his devotee Narasimha. Damodar Kund also has the seat of Mahaprabhuji. Thus, Damodar Kund has religious significance along with its ancient heritage.
According to Junagadh mythology, Brahma and Indredev performed many sacrifices in this shrine. All the gods and goddesses were present in it. Each of them wanted to make a shrine in their own place, so Brahmaji manifested Gangaji from his kamandal, and invited other shrines there. Thus, in this tank, rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Narmada, Sindhu, Kaveri, Kshipra, Charmanyavati, Godavari, etc., lived there. The tank was named Brahmakund after the name of Brahma. On the promise of Brahma, all the gods settled here in the form of Damodar. So this shrine came to be known as Damodar. Here a human being is swallowed whole by throwing bones and attains moksha. The bones deposited in the Gomti form the chakra form, the algae form in the Ganga and the water form in the Damodar.
It is said that Damodarrai himself took the form of Narasimha Mehta and paid homage to Narasimha Mehta's father on the fifth Saturday of Bhadrava Vad. Hence, many people from Gujarat and Saurashtra come to Damodar Kund for Pitru Tarpan in the month of Bhadrava and perform Pitru Tarpan near this holy tank. Sri Krishna ran away from the desert to destroy the demon Kalayavan, hence he was called Ranchod. After running away, Sadeh reached Damodar Kund. According to folklore, when Shri Krishna died near Triveni Sangam near Veraval due to an arrow of a Pardhi hitting his leg, his bones were buried in this tank by his grandson.
