Yilan County, Taiwan — December 27, 2025
On the night of December 27, 2025, Taiwan was shaken by a powerful offshore earthquake that struck just before midnight, abruptly disrupting daily life across the island and reminding residents of the region’s persistent seismic risk. At approximately 11:05 p.m. local time, seismic monitoring centers detected a strong earthquake originating off Taiwan’s northeastern coast, near Yilan County, beneath the waters of the western Pacific Ocean.
Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration initially measured the earthquake at a magnitude of around 7.0, while international monitoring agencies later assessed the event at slightly lower values, generally in the range of 6.6 to 6.7. Such discrepancies are common in the immediate aftermath of major earthquakes, as different agencies rely on distinct calculation models and seismic datasets. What remained undisputed, however, was the strength of the shaking and the wide geographic area over which it was felt.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 70 to 73 kilometers, classifying it as a mid-depth seismic event rather than a shallow crustal quake. This depth played a critical role in shaping the outcome of the disaster. While the energy released was substantial, the deeper focus helped dissipate surface-level destruction, preventing the kind of catastrophic structural damage often associated with shallower earthquakes of similar magnitude.
Taiwan lies at the complex boundary between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate, making it one of the most seismically active regions in East Asia. Earthquakes are not unusual, but events approaching magnitude 7.0 remain serious and closely monitored due to the island’s dense population and highly developed infrastructure. Within seconds of the rupture, seismic waves propagated rapidly through northern and eastern Taiwan.
Residents in Yilan and neighboring Hualien counties were among the first to feel the shaking. Buildings swayed noticeably, unsecured objects shifted, and many people instinctively sought cover or moved toward exits. In urban centers such as Taipei, New Taipei City, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Taichung, the tremor was widely felt, particularly in high-rise buildings where the motion was amplified. Witnesses described several seconds of sustained shaking, enough to rattle windows, move furniture, and trigger emergency alerts on mobile devices.
