Local cyclists are sounding the alarm over a proposed motion from the province to squander new bike lanes.

The Ontario government is considering bringing forward legislation that would prohibit the installation of bike lanes, when lanes for motor vehicles are removed as a result.

At a news conference on Friday, Ontario’s transportation minister said the province was “open” to all ideas to reduce gridlock.

Ontario Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie expressed her opinion on the plans, criticizing the move.

“You can’t afford groceries. You can’t find a doctor. Your kids’ school is in disrepair. And instead of helping you, Doug Ford is picking a fight over bike lanes,” Crombie said.

The City of Hamilton has an accelerated plan for cycling that would see a major expansion of cycling infrastructure over the next five years.

Officials say while many of these expansion plans do not require the reallocation of motor vehicle lanes, some projects might.
