At the time, Lara was said to be in her early thirties while Oshiomole was 63 years old. This massive age gap got people talking, with many speculating that this marriage was not a love match and hinting at gold-digging.
The identity of the woman who captured the heart of the ex-governor also set tongues wagging as some speculated she was a model from Ethiopia, the Philippines, or Europe. But Oshiomole cleared the air himself, explaining shortly after the wedding that his wife was from Cape Verde and a lawyer, not a model as many had speculated. The senator also described her as a humble and understanding woman who accepted him with all my flaws.
On May 24 2015, during an interview with The Vanguard, Oshiomole’s mother, Hajia Aishetu Oshiomole, explained why the couple are a perfect fit. According to Hajia, she supported the marriage because Nigerian women can be such gold diggers.
