What is the difference between Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino?
Rosso and Brunello are produced in the province of Siena around the town of Montalcino. Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino are made of Sangiovesse, which is also known in the Montalcino area as Sangiovese Grosso, Prugnolo Gentile and simply Brunello. The other difference is ageing regulations.
Brunello di Montalcino is aged for 2 years in oak. Minimum ageing in bottles: 4 months (6 months for the Riserva), which is Rosso di Montalcino, is aged for 1 year and is released on the 1st of September of the year following the harvest. Oak ageing is not mandatory for Rosso di Montalcino wines.
Did you know that Brunello di Montalcino was created in 1865 by Biondi Santi and labeled as Brunello di Montalcino in 1888.

My favourite producers are: Gianni Brunelli, Col d’Orcia, Mastro Janni, Le Potazzine, and Conti Constani.
