On 8th December 2013 and as the last event of the LU150 1863 -2013 celebrations, the London Transport Museum ran a steam train event on the 1904 Uxbridge branch between Harrow-On-The-Hill and Uxbridge.

Because of a fault the Metropolitan Railway steam locomotive No.1 could not be used, so a GWR locomotive which had been painted in London Transport red was used instead.

In many ways this event was more accessible to more people than the steam train events which extend to Amersham, as although the mileage is shorter the Uxbridge route passes through more densely populated communities - and is closer to the many of us who live elsewhere around London.

Seating accommodation on the special train was so popular that an extra late afternoon / early evening journey was made. Along the line I saw many family groups enjoying the day's special happenings (ie: not just adult men an anoraks!) The weather was reasonably kind; although a bit breezy it was also cloudy / bright, sunny at times, mild, and most importantly - dry!

I was pleased to be able to source footage which included simultaneous views of the special train and both Metropolitan and Piccadilly Line S & 1973 Stock trains. It would be fascinating hearing what 'transit' professionals from other cities globally will think when they see steam trains and 'urban transit metro' trains sharing tracks! It is so 'out of the box',

This is film 1 which includes views from Hillingdon, Ruislip, the junction just outside Rayners Lane station and West Harrow. Hillingdon is, of course, the very modern glass station which was re-sited when the A40 road was built. In the film you can see the very basic and crude RSJ columns which are used for the platform lighting, complete with outdoor / back garden style lights and peeling paint! It makes quite a contrast to the 1904 Ruislip station!

Film 2 includes views taken at Harrow On The Hill and Uxbridge - which was also celebrating it being 75 years since the much acclaimed 'concrete cathedral' station opened in December 1938.
