Prior To European Discovery , Lake Victoria Was Well - Known To The Arab Traders, Who Explored The Inland Routes In Africa Through The Lake, In Search Of Gold And Ivory, As Well As Slaves For Trade. They Have Well Made Maps Of The Lake Dating Back To 12th Century AD.
Lake Victoria Is Situated In The Great Rift Valley And Its Area Is Divided Among Three Countries, Which Are Kenya, Uganda, And Tanzania. It Is The World's Largest Tropical Lake, The World's Second Largest Freshwater Lake And The World's Ninth Largest Continental Lake In Terms Of Volume, Containing 2,750 Cubic Kilometers Of Water. Lake Victoria Has An Maximum Length Of 337 Km, And Is 250 Km Wide At Its Widest Point. It Has A Maximum Depth Of 84 Meters And A Average Depth Of 40 Meters .
Many Rivers And Streams Flow Into Lake Victoria, The Biggest River Flowing Into The Lake Is The Kagera River. Other Major Rivers Include River Mara, Yala, Nyando, Bukora And Katonga. Only One River Flows Out Of The Lake And Is Called As The White Nile. The White Nile Is One Of The Two Rivers That Form The Main Nile River. The Other One Is Called As The Blue Nile. The Two Rivers Join Together At Khartoum City, The Capital Of Sudan To Form The Nile River, The Longest River Of Africa.
