This is a review of my ground up restored 1971 MGB. I purchased this MGB from the original owner. After the owner had hip surgery he could no longer drive the car. Sadly the car sat outside for 10 years. I was fortunate to buy the car before any serious rust could do any damage. There was only two areas with rust. One being behind the driver's seat floor when a defective lower windshield seal allowed water in egress into the driver's compartment. It was only necessary to replace the rear half of the floor board. The water leak also ruined the dash. The inner metal bottom of the dash frame was badly rusted. I replaced this dash with a freshly re-skinned later model dash with glove compartment and vents. The only modification was to make 2 new round vent holes in the firewall as is in later models MGBs.
The other section that had a small amount of rust was the trunk floor. A bad trunk seal and leaking trunk MG badge allowed water to leak into the trunk. An old towel left in the trunk floor constantly saturated during the rainy season start some minor surface rust in one 6" section. A new section was welded in. Like other other MGBs in my collection this car received a ground up restoration. Every nut and bolt, panel and fitting was removed restored or replaced with new parts. This was a 1 year project. During the mechanical portion of the restoration the engine was sent off to the machine shop and reassembled once I received all the components. The original 4 speed transmission was replaced by a restored Overdrive unit I had in stock. The front and rear suspensions and braking components received a complete restorations and or replacement. New top and complete new interior including replacement of the original type seat belts. New retracting 3 point restrains were installed.
