What is SGOT?
SGOT is fully formed by serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase. It is also called aspartate transaminase (AST). It is an enzyme found in the liver. Whenever there is any injury to the liver, this enzyme reaches the blood. Therefore, this SGOT enzyme is found in liver diseases.

What should be the SGOT?
The normal range of SGOT is as follows –

• Male: 8 to 40 units per liter (U/L)
• Female: 6 to 32 units per liter (U/L)

When does the value of SGOT increase?
• The value of SGOT increases in Hepatitis ie Acute Hepatitis like Viral Hepatitis BCA.
• Increases in bacterial hepatitis, malarial hepatitis or chronic hepatitis.
• In liver cirrhosis or liver cancer, this value increases when there is no blood supply to the liver.
• This value increases due to the effects of hepatotoxic drugs like pain medications, non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), hepatotoxic drugs like HIV drugs, TB drugs, chemotherapy
drugs, etc.
• Taking steroids and taking cholesterol-lowering drugs increases the amount of SGOT.
• Its quantity also increases in diseases related to heart, kidney and brain because, in these organs
also SGOT enzymes reach in some quantity.
• Its value increases when the muscle is injured.
• Its value increases in case of myocardial infarction.
• Its value automatically increases in pregnancy.
• Its quantity increases even after burning more.

Why is the SGOT test done?
The SGOT test is a variant of the Liver Function Test (LFT). In addition to the liver, SGOT enzymes are also transported to the heart, skeletal muscles, and brain in small amounts through the blood, so SGOT tests are recommended along with liver function tests. If there is any kind of damage or injury to the liver or any disease, then the value of SGOT enzyme increases in the blood which indicates liver disease. Liver diseases are detected by this test. This test is done to know all the types of diseases and what is the difference between them and how much liver is damaged.

Under what circumstances is the SGOT test done?
• When the symptoms of jaundice appear such as yellowing of the skin and eyes, excessive
yellowing of urine etc.
• Complaints of chronic pain in the abdomen. Nausea, vomiting
• Swelling in the abdomen.
• Anemia means lack of blood in the body.
• Any liver problem/loss due to hepatotoxic drug.
• obesity.
• In case of diabetes.
• Liver problems due to excessive drinking.
