Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari (25 December 1880 – 10 May 1936) was a prominent Indian nationalist and political leader who played a significant role in the Indian Independence Movement. He served as the president of both the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League. Ansari was also a founding member of Jamia Millia Islamia University, serving as its chancellor from 1928 until his death in 1936.
Ansari received his early education at Victoria School before moving to Hyderabad with his family. He earned his medical degree from Madras Medical College and later pursued advanced studies in England on a scholarship.
In 1905, Ansari achieved his M.D. and M.S. degrees, and in 1910, he obtained a Master of Surgery (ChM) from the University of Edinburgh, submitting a thesis titled *Treatment of Syphilis by Arylarsonates with Special Reference to Recent Research*. A brilliant student, Ansari gained expertise working at the London Lock Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital, where he became a pioneer in surgery. In recognition of his contributions, Charing Cross Hospital named a ward in his honor, the Ansari Ward.
During his time in England, Dr. Ansari became actively involved in the Indian Independence Movement. After returning to Delhi, he joined both the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League, dedicating himself to the cause of India's freedom.
Ansari held multiple terms as the General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and served as the President of the Indian National Congress during its 1927 session.
