My son and I made an automatic plastic pellet dispensing machine for a school event called Ace Innovation. The purpose of the device is to dispense small plastic pellets in exact amounts weighing anywhere between 1 to 10 ounces and be accurate to 0.1 ounce. My wife makes therapeutic weighted blankets and needs the plastic pellets dispensed in exact amounts multiple times. Weighing them manually is very time consuming for her. The brain is a Raspberry Pi running Linux and the I/O is handled by a pyMCU microcontroller. The scale is a DYMO M10 connected with USB. My son came up with the basic design for the hardware and software on his own and I helped him build the machine and write the software. It was a great opportunity for him to learn coding, electronics and fabrication all at the same time.
