Know how Vitamin A can K!ll You | Vitamin A Side-Effects | Vitamin A #vitamin #nutrition
Vitamin A is essential for vision, immune function, and skin health. However, because it's fat-soluble, your body stores any excess, primarily in the liver. Over time, this can build up and lead to toxicity.
There are two types of vitamin A toxicity: acute and chronic.
Acute Vitamin A Toxicity occurs when you consume an extremely high dose within a short period. Typically more than 100 times the daily recommended dose. Symptoms can appear within days and include severe headaches, blurred vision, nausea, dizziness, aching muscles, and coordination problems. In extreme cases, it can lead to increased pressure in the brain, causing drowsiness, coma, or even death.
Chronic Vitamin A Toxicity happens from regularly consuming high doses over time. This can lead to dry skin, painful muscles and joints, fatigue, depression, and abnormal liver tests. In severe cases, it can cause liver damage and birth defects if taken in high doses during pregnancy.
Interestingly, beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, is less risky but can still cause skin discoloration and, in high doses, may increase lung cancer risk in smokers.
Resolution: So, how can you avoid these risks? It’s Simple.
Stick to the recommended daily allowance – around 900 mcg for men and 700 mcg for women.
Avoid high-dose supplements unless prescribed by a doctor.
Be cautious with certain medications and consult with your healthcare provider, especially if you're pregnant, have liver disease, or are on specific treatments like retinoids for acne.
Remember, balance is key! Ensure you're getting enough vitamin A for its benefits, but don't go overboard. Your health depends on it!
