The idea that medieval Europeans widely used chastity belts to ensure female fidelity is largely a myth that has been thoroughly debunked by historians. While a few museum specimens exist, these are either later forgeries created during the Victorian era to satisfy prurient curiosity about the "barbaric" Middle Ages, or they are misidentified medical devices used for treating hernias or other conditions. The earliest reliable historical references to chastity belts date only to the 15th century and describe them as satirical or allegorical devices, not practical ones. Medieval people had far more practical concerns about survival, disease, and basic hygiene that would have made such contraptions impractical and dangerous. The myth gained traction during the 18th and 19th centuries when Enlightenment and Victorian writers used it to contrast their "civilized" societies with the supposedly crude medieval period. Archaeological evidence shows no widespread use of such devices, and medieval medical texts make no mention of them. The persistence of this myth says more about later periods' attitudes toward sexuality and their desire to portray the Middle Ages as a dark, repressive time than it does about actual medieval practices.
