About six weeks ago, while we were on the road—actually pulled off because our truck was overheating—I got the dreaded phone call. One of our horses at home had been injured. Mesa and Josey, our two youngest equines, had somehow gotten out not once, but twice while we were gone—something that had never happened before.

We’re still not entirely sure how they escaped, but our caretaker called to say he couldn’t catch them and they were tearing around the neighborhood. Mesa had cut her face all the way to the bone.

I immediately called our amazing neighbors, and they jumped into action. They were able to catch Mesa and Josey and even hauled Mesa to the vet for an emergency visit on our behalf. She got cleaned up and stitched, but the injury meant I had to sit out the next round of clinics and keep a close eye on her recovery.

It’s been six weeks now, and we even hauled Mesa with us to an event last week so I could continue to care for her while she healed. Today, we’re showing you how her injury is healing and sharing an exciting update: we’re expanding the dry lot because Mesa’s coffin bone fracture is healed—and she’s finally able to rejoin the herd!
