“B-WINGS” is a vertical scrolling shooting game for arcades that was launched by Data East in 1984.
The goal of the game is to operate the so-called “B-WING” or FX-1, recover the wings that were stolen, and defeat the enemy mobile fortress known as Gobnas.

You control the FX-1 (Main Fighter) and equip various WINGs as power-up parts for your aircraft to gain an advantage in battle, and destroy the heavy mobile fortress called Gobnas that awaits at the end of each stage.

The game is operated using an 8-direction lever and two buttons. The lever moves the aircraft, button 1 attacks, and button 2, when a wing is equipped, releases the wing (detaches it), and when not equipped, descends to low altitude for a certain period of time. Although it is a vertical scrolling shooting game, if you operate the aircraft sideways, the background will scroll infinitely.

Without a wing, the shot from button 1 is represented by a single thin line and cannot be fired continuously. Furthermore, it cannot be fired for a certain period of time even if it hits an enemy. When a wing is present, it can be fired continuously according to the characteristics of that wing (but not always).

The screen consists of two layers, upper and lower. The aircraft is usually in the sky, and when button 2 is pressed when no wing is equipped, it descends to low altitude. When descending to low altitude, both enemy and aircraft are represented by small carmine characters along the altitude, and furthermore, they become invincible from enemies and bullets in the sky when descending to low altitude. When in low altitude, it will miss if it collides with enemies or backgrounds in low altitude.

Wings

There are 8 types of wings that change the attack method of your aircraft, and 2 are prepared for each stage. By destroying the two transport aircraft that carry the wings, the aircraft can be equipped with wings. (When the transport aircraft is carrying the wings, the aircraft cannot move to that location.) The first wing of each stage 5-8, 13-16, 21-24, 29-32, 37-40, 45 can be selected from 5 types (4 special wings and 1 enhanced wing). Otherwise, the wings that appear are predetermined. Generally, wings that are advantageous for capture appear, but you can proceed with the game without necessarily equipping those wings. However, Gobnas with weak points that can only be attacked from the side is difficult to defeat without S-WING, V-WING, M-WING that can attack directly sideways, and J-WING for Gobnas whose weak points are surrounded by shields. If you fail to capture these bosses, you will restart from the stage where you can get the capture wing. The wing itself after installation also has a hit judgment (left and right parts based on the main body FX-1), and if an enemy or enemy bullet or obstacle touches there once, it causes a failure (smoke comes out) and the wing attack in that direction cannot be made. In addition to this, even if the lever is neutral, the braking of the aircraft is unstable and shakes, and even stable movement becomes impossible. If the wing fails, you need to clear the stage in that state (start from no failure in the next stage) or press button 2 to detach the equipped wing and give up the wing to avoid failure. In addition, if an enemy or enemy bullet or obstacle touches further while the wing is failing, it will miss and restart from a certain point. Also, if you are attacking in a state where a wing is installed, some of them may slightly change the graphics of the wing according to the state of the installed wing.
