Materialists Movie Review by Sucharita Tyagi - The most important person to me in the whole wide world is my husband. The centre of my universe, the light of my life.
But if Pedro Pascal looked me in the eye and said, “I wanna be with you for your intangible assets”, I will become single so fast!
Joking baby, love you, never leaving you.
But that’s only because Pedro Pascal doesn’t know who I am.
As she did with Past Lives, New York resident Celine Song just wants to remind her viewers, via women who hold centre stage, that both people and a city only make sense if you stay malleable and allow yourselves to experience them, with as much open-mindedness as your station in life allows. Her writing captures the ache of modern longing with such clarity, it made me SO THANKFUL I don’t have to look for potential partners anymore. Despite New York being called the city that never sleeps, Song’s version of it is graceful and melancholy. A city that says to you, like a partner you’ve reconnected with, “I want to be with you for who you are. Let’s do this”.
Women with ambitions and men who make kindness feel seductive, Materialist is a dream scenario movie for someone like me. I mean, when a man who has NO COLLATERAL to offer except his unnerving charm says under the starry night, ‘I am a beggar for you”, and the woman doesn’t instantly dissolve into her arms, taking time instead to think, you KNOW this is a lady doing her ladies justice. Women Telling Women’s Stories!
