On 1 February 1999, England national football manager Glenn Hoddle was interviewed by ITN’s Trevor McDonald about the ongoing controversy caused by an interview Hoddle gave to Matt Dickinson of The Times about his belief in karma and reincarnation. The England manager was reported to have suggested that people born with disabilities were paying for sins in a former life, comments which drew criticism from politicians including Prime Minister Tony Blair as well as the general public, with one BBC survey finding 90% respondents believed Hoddle should not continue in his role as England manager. Hoddle himself argued that his comments had been misconstrued, and pointed out his history of supporting organisations dedicated to helping disabled people. Despite his efforts to explain himself, Hoddle was sacked as England manager the day after this interview aired.
