How to use the National Electrical Code (NEC) to answer questions on the Electrical Power PE Exam

In this video we go over how to effectively use the National Electrical Code Book (NEC) to solve problems on the Electrical Power PE Exam.

The NEC is a large book with an overwhelming amount of code. The size can be quite intimidating to those that are not familiar with it and can cause students to either drastically over-prepare for this topic or not prepare for it at all.

Not only will you be tested on your understanding of the National Electrical Code on the PE Exam, but parts of the National Electric Code will also spill over into topics from other chapters and be required to solve questions correctly.

An example of this is instead of question giving you the amps of a load for circuit analysis, it will give you characteristics of the load that you must reference in the National Electric Code to find the full load amps before working the problem

The instructions in this chapter will be a lot shorter compared to some of the other denser topics since there are not a lot of step by step math calculations or formulas to show you.

Instead, we will focus on some of the most important sections of the codebook, touch on some of the more common tables used for solving problems, and spend time teaching the best way to use your time for looking up code properly.

The quiz following this chapter will mostly be questions designed to give you adequate practice looking up definitions and codes that may be unfamiliar to you, just like you will have to on the PE exam.

Actual PE Exam NEC questions can vary greatly. If you are lucky you will encounter 1 or 2 that you can answer correctly from memory and from past practice.

Expect and prepare yourself to be able to answer questions you are not 100% familiar with but that you feel comfortable looking for under a time limit.
