According to poll results, Applebee's ranks as the 17th most popular dining brand in the United States. This is quite impressive considering the vast number of restaurants and chains in the country. However, Applebee's faces a significant challenge with the FDA's proposed ban on food dyes, and they are not the only ones in this situation.

In line with other major brands and restaurants, Applebee's has a selection of menu items containing food dyes that the FDA plans to phase out by the end of 2026. These dyes are present in certain dishes, and while some of the items might be expected, a few were quite surprising. Let's take a closer look at these menu items.

This one is quite puzzling. Tartar sauce is typically a mayonnaise-based condiment that includes pickles, dill, and various herbs. Applebee’s provides a full disclosure of the ingredients in their dishes, and surprisingly, blue dye is listed as the last ingredient in their tartar sauce. It's certainly unusual!

The Classic Hot Buffalo Sauce and Extra Hot Buffalo Sauce at Applebee’s both contain Red 40. In contrast, a well-known brand, Frank’s RedHot Buffalo Sauce, achieves its red color naturally, using cayenne pepper and paprika, without any added dyes.

Certain chocolate syrups and sauces use Red 40 to enhance their color. However, options like Hershey's chocolate syrup are free from added dyes. It's worth noting that Applebee's Kids Hot Fudge Sundae includes Red 40 in its chocolate syrup.

If you were considering the strawberry sundae as a healthier choice, there's some unfortunate news. Similar to the hot fudge sundae, the Kids Strawberry Sundae contains Red 40 in the strawberry puree. Additionally, the maraschino cherry also includes Red 40, so be aware if you find it on other desserts or drinks.

Applebee’s serves up Cinnabon Mini Swirls as a dessert option. In this treat, the cream cheese frosting includes Yellow 5, which is noteworthy since regular cream cheese usually doesn’t contain any added dyes. Quite interesting.

Both the regular Dijon mustard and the Dijon mustard sauce include Yellow 5 to enhance their color. In contrast, regular yellow mustard typically doesn't have any dye added. Its vibrant color comes from turmeric, which suggests we might see an increased use of turmeric as a natural yellow dye with the upcoming ban.

If you decide to order a dish featuring Jalapeno Bacon Sauce or Tangy Bacon Sauce, it's important to note that both of these sauces contain Yellow 5.

This discovery was quite unexpected. Onion rings actually contain two banned dyes: Yellow 5 and Yellow 6. While fried foods are often desired for their golden color, it's surprising that these yellow dyes are used to achieve that effect.

You might be curious about what a "gummi brain" is. It's actually a garnish used in a special cocktail called the "Zombie," which is available for a limited time around Halloween. These gummi brains feature both Red 40 and Blue 1 dyes. The cocktail itself includes blue curacao, a type of liquor that also uses blue dye, making it a double dose of colorful fun.

Most menu items at Applebee’s that contain dyes are found in the sauce and dessert categories, though there are some unexpected ones, like tartar sauce and onion rings. The FDA has proposed a ban on food dyes, and this has stirred diverse opinions.
