In December of 1920, Salt Lake City leaders needed a place for planes delivering air mail to land. They selected a place west of downtown and named it Woodward Field, after local pilot John P. Woodward. During the next 100 years, SLC developed the area into the 23rd busiest airport in the U.S. On Sept. 15, 2020, SLC is opening a new international airport in the same spot.
