1st Prayer:

yogēna cittasya padēna vācāṁ
malaṁ śarīrasya ca vaidyakēna |
yoSpākarot taṁ pravaraṁ munīnāṁ
patañjaliṁ prāñjalirānatoSsmi ||

Meaning: Maharshi Patanjali - who bestowed us with the means to eradicate the impurities of the mind through Yoga; of speech through Samskrita grammar; and of the body through Ayurveda medicine. To such noblest of the Sages, I offer my salutations (by joining the palms🙏🏻).

2nd Prayer:

ābāhupuruṣākāraṁ
śaṅkhacakrāsidhāriṇam
sahasraśirasaṁ śvētaṁ
praṇamāmi patañjalim

Meaning: The one whose upper body has a human form; whose arms hold a conch, the divine wheel & a sword; who is crowned by a thousand headed cobra (an incarnation of Adishesha); I offer my humble Salutations to that Sage Patanjali.

This is usually chanted in a traditional Hatha Yoga class. As you can see in the meaning, 1st Shloka talks about His literary work and the 2nd one describes His manifested form - He is known to be an incarnation or an Amsha of Adishesha (the one who upholds the earth in space, the holy serpent on whom Bhagavan Vishnu reclines in His Yoga Nidra).

It’s always a humbling experience to begin our practice of Yoga by offering our salutations to Bhagavan Patanjali through contemplation on the meaning of these shloka-s. It reinforces the spirit with which He compiled Yoga as a practice science. That’s indeed a blessing to every Yoga student.
