Dwight Lyman Moody, commonly known as D. L. Moody, was an American evangelist and preacher. He was born in Northfield, Massachusetts, on February 5, 1837, and he died on December 22, 1899, in Northfield, Massachusetts.
Moody's father died when he was only 4 years old, leaving his mother to raise him and his eight siblings. As a young man, Moody moved to Chicago, where he found success as a businessman selling shoes. However, he felt called to ministry and began holding gospel meetings in a makeshift tent.
Moody became known for his passionate preaching style and his emphasis on salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. He focused his efforts on bringing the gospel to the urban poor, who were often neglected by mainstream churches.
In the late 1800s, Moody became a leading figure in the North American Revival movement, which sought to revive Christianity across the continent. He also founded the Moody Bible Institute, a training school for missionaries and pastors, in Chicago in 1886.
Moody's impact on American Christianity was significant. He was a gifted speaker and a tireless worker for the kingdom of God. He published several books, including "The Way to God" and "Prevailing Prayer," which continue to be widely read today.
D. L. Moody's legacy is one of dedication to spreading the gospel and uplifting the most vulnerable members of society. His influence on the Christian faith and on evangelism in America still resonates today.
