Whenever you want to knit a pattern, you have to knit a gauge swatch first so you can get gauge. Meaning you can produce the exact same fabric the designer used as a building block for the pattern. But a lot of knitters struggle with this process and this video will show you 5 very important reasons why you may not be able to get gauge - and easy tips and tricks to avoid that. A lot of people use bad rulers, knit too small swatches, knit flat swatches for projects in the round, don't block their swatches, or use a wrong stitch pattern. There are so many reasons why you may not be able to get gauge - or you even may succeed but your project still doesn't fit.
And it's my honest opinion that only through understanding what you are doing - and the limitations of the process - will you be able to knit sweaters, etc that fit. Gauge is very hazy kind of undefined thing and once you realize that you actually need to measure and compare, you will be able to become a better knitter.
