Because these past weeks I focused only on coursework, I decided to talk about the differences between research-based and task-based coursework.

The main difference is in the level of ambiguity that the student is expected to handle. In research coursework, we are given a topic, which is nothing more than a direction. It’s up to us to choose a path which we assume to yield good results. Furthermore, we are in charge of defining the aims, experiments and appropriate evaluation. Because each step comes with uncertainty, it’s much harder to internalise all this vagueness. Starting from nothing is not very fun, because many things could go wrong - remember those one-day-to-fix bugs in code? Or googling for one hour how to read a specific format? The reward comes after you see your idea of taking shape and getting the first results (even if they are wrong, at least it’s something).

The punchline is that getting good at dealing with ambiguity is a long, but fulfilling journey.
