To save her son from Pharaoh’s decree, Jochebed crafted a small basket of bulrushes, sealing it with pitch to keep it watertight. With a heavy heart, she hid the baby among the tall reeds of the Nile, while his sister, Miriam, watched from a distance.

Soon, Pharaoh’s daughter came to the river to bathe. Spotting the basket, she sent her maid to retrieve it. When she opened it and saw the crying infant, she was moved with pity. "This is one of the Hebrew children," she said softly.

Miriam courageously stepped forward and offered to find a Hebrew woman to nurse the baby. The Princess agreed, and Miriam ran to fetch her own mother.

Jochebed was paid to raise her own son until he was old enough to return to the palace. The Princess adopted him as her own, naming him Moses, for she had drawn him out of the water.
