Having grown up and lived in the UK all my life, it is impossible to ignore how the First World War is an intrinsic part of how Britain sees itself. Yet, whilst the state has marked lots of its centenaries, rarely has it marked those in the interwar years. However, the year 2019 marked 100 years since the 1919 Race Riots, an early example of 'white terror' (hooks, 1992) on British soil in no less than nine seaport communities, including Liverpool with the Murder of Charles Wotton and further violence in South Wales.

This lecture will explore the role of colonialism in one of the most-taught parts of British history. A part of history where the role of the British Empire has largely been written out. This session will also give an alternate praxis where history and sociology compound each other for a richer interpretation of this period, with further uses on school and university curricula.
