Biomimetic is a pseudo-specialty created to form a niche-market inside of dentistry and help dentists advertise themselves as somehow being more advanced or better than other dentists. In reality they are doing little that sets them apart from general dentistry, at least that's based on proven science or studies. All dentists are trying to make their work as life-like as possible and be as conservative as possible. Being too conservative has it's pros and cons and being aggressive has its pros and cons.

I've seen Biomimetic dentists advertise that they hand layer their white filling material, which is good because all dentists should be doing that. I've also seen them advertise that they use more conservative "onlays" or partial crowns instead of full coverage crowns or caps. Yes an onlay does preserve tooth structure, but at the cost of strength in not covering the full chewing surface of the tooth, or leaving twice as much seal or "margin" where germs and food can eat away at the edges and cause it to fail. A simple full crown has a minimum length of seal or edge where it can fail, onlays almost always have much more seam area where it can go bad and fail, especially when it doesn't cover the full chewing surface of the tooth.

There are other things that Biomimetic dentists advertise, such as making sure your bite is correct, and that's good, because all dentists should be doing that already. Some are better at it than others, though every dentist tries.

I haven't yet seen anything either very different, or backed by good study results, that sets Biomimetic dentists apart from the rest of dentistry, so if you are going to see an general dentist that you like, rest easy, I'm sure they'll be just as good!
