In the summer of 2025, the staff of Catherine C. and Thomas E. Huenefeld Story Center at the Main Library in downtown Cincinnati, set out to document the history of various local theaters and explore how each serves the public.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company has been bringing Shakespeare and the classics to life since 1993. Brian Isaac Phillips, Producing Artistic Director and CEO, remembers its early days of doing shows in a former movie theater, comments on being one of only five theaters in the country to complete the Shakespeare canon, and speaks on the company’s program to commission new works. He also discusses the planning and construction their state-of-the-art theater, which opened in 2017 in Over-the -Rhine.
