Ángel Chamorro, MD, PhD, Hospital Clinic of Barcelona & University of Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain, discusses the role of information as a risk factor for stroke and how it can be targeted for stroke prevention. It has long been suggested that inflammation can lead to atherosclerosis, the major cause of ischemic stroke, and recent clinical evidence has demonstrated that atherosclerosis can be considered an inflammatory condition. Several studies have demonstrated the benefits of anti-inflammatory agents for primary stroke prevention but no evidence regarding secondary prevention is currently available. Several ongoing trails are investigating the use of inflammatory agents such as colchicine for secondary prevention of recurrent stroke.
