What really is 2106? I'll go over the significance of the recurring number, and cover what a lot of the discourse is - based on the paper that Edward Crow gives you before his boss fight, its likely the year that the guests came from, to prevent the "end of the world"

But that's where most people stop. Bacteria on the guests, they're the ones coming back introducing it, and then everyone dies. But if this bacteria is so killer, how are numerous guests coming through the portal trying to stop the end of the world? Shouldn't they be dead as well?

Time to add my own spin to things - I think the bacteria must have mutated, becoming something that feeds off organic material, not just human beings. This would happen with humans developing a resistance to it, and thus they are alive to carry it back in time. The real threat is how the bacteria evolves and thus leaves earth as a souless husk of a planet, with no more resources for humans to survive. This is what the disfigured guests were trying to warn Crow about, but by harvesting the roots, Edward Crow starts the apocalypse.
