In this continuation of the "Climbing the Rating Ladder" series I take on players of various ratings levels while pointing out typical mistakes and spots for improvement along the way (possibly my own!? :)). Here I commentate a 10+5 game against a player rated 1339 on Chess.com. In the Modern Scandinavian (1.e5 d5 2.exd5 Nf6), Black foregoes the immediate capture on d5 (2...Qxd5) in favor of development. This line is closely associated with gambit for Black, such as the Portuguese Variation (3.d4 Bf4), and the Icelandic Gambit (3.c4 e6). As White, I recommend avoiding any greediness associated with trying to hang on to the d5 pawn, and instead simply look to establish a large center with d2-d4 and c2-c4.
