In 2012 from the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health that re-evaluates global access to safe drinking water, specifically addressing the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Target 7c related to water access. Authored by researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the study argues that relying on the existing MDG indicator—which merely classifies water sources as “improved” or “unimproved”—significantly overestimates the population using truly safe water. The authors adjust global water safety estimates by incorporating data on microbial water quality (faecal contamination) and the presence of sanitary risks from a WHO/UNICEF Rapid Assessment of Drinking Water Quality (RADWQ) study. Their analysis concludes that accounting for contamination and sanitary risks substantially changes the baseline and target for the MDG, estimating that 1.8 billion people used unsafe water in 2010, highlighting a major shortfall in meeting the global safe drinking water objective.
